Section 4: K12 Resources on the Internet

Activity

K12 teachers will find the Internet to be a rich lode of resources for the classroom as well as professional development. Spend a little time browsing through the sections here and add one resource from each area to your Site Collection.

The two major resources are the Georgia Learning Connections, a source of official lesson plans, and Galileo, a state project to make information available to residents of the state. Other sources of lesson plans will be provided, along with general K12 resources.

Assignment

  1. Class Discussion Board
You will be working in Section Four of the Class Discussion Board.
    1. Post a new thread to discuss one or more of your experiences with this section. Do you see any tools and resources here that you can use in your teaching or work? Be sure to post to section Four of the board.
    2. Respond to a Section 4 post from another student.

  2. Link Share
Select two different resources from Galileo and/or Georgia Learning Connections to post and discuss on the Link Share board. Choose any resource on this page, any site linked to any of these linked resources, or any relevant web site that you are already aware of. Be sure the links go in Section 4 and be sure the link works correctly. After you enter the link return to the link share board and click on the link to be sure it will correctly open the page you are citing.

Tip: You must always begin the URL with http:// and it is usually most successful to actually visit that page and use your mouse the copy the URL directly from the browser location strip; then use your mouse to paste the URL into the link share board.

Resources

Accessing the Galileo Free Databases

  1. Start at the Galileo Home Page.

  2. Select the link for Databases or All Databases

  3. Scroll down the Password Entry page until you see the link for Public Databases

  4. This takes you to a web page which lists public (free) databases alphabetically by title. Select the Education link. You can also access the Galileo Education Resources directly.

The Galileo Student Resources links a number of resources for teachers and parents as well as students. You'll find terrific web sites here that you can safely offer to your students. High school graduation tests are linked here as well as myriad sites for children and teens.

A Note on Frames
Galileo is a framed site and this can cause problems when you need to add a resource to your bookmarks or favorites. Please read about breaking out of frames on the tools page.
