NetGuide: the Class Mailing ListCommunicate with the entire class. Write tonetguide@matrixmagic.comAbout Mailing ListsMailing lists serve as a kind of round robin or many-to-many discussion group. They are based in the email system and are subject specific, ie, the discussions revolve around a single topic. Unlike Usenet, in which one *goes to* the discussion and where one can pick and choose items to read, mailing lists are delivered to your email box and you receive all the posts automatically.Mailing lists work best to stimulate thought and to serve as resources for information. A good mailing list will provoke critical thinking and analysis as members debate and explore the issues of the field. List members often share resources, by posting addresses of useful sites, or by posting bibliographies for further reading.
How do Mailing Lists Work?Mailing lists are handled by a special program running on the host server computer. There are many of these programs to choose from, including Listserv, Majordomo and mailman . The great advantage of a mailing list is that all you have to do is send your post to one address and every person who belongs to the list will automagically receive a copy. This special address is called the list address.
If you are new to the culture of mailing lists please take time to read Patrick Crispen's excellent workshop lesson on Netiquette It's not too long, it's as useful as it is amusing, and you don't have to do the homework ;-). If you are new to email in general, another terrific resource is A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email which includes wonderful explanations for conveying emotion, formality and body language in email. It also contains a very good list of emoticons, jargon and acronyms.
About NetGuideOur class mailing list is netguide. It runs under a mailing list program called Mailman. When you post to the list address your email to netguide@matrixmagic.com and that mail will be automagically sent to every member.
Practice discretion when handling your mail. Not every single post will appear relevant to your current needs. Delete unread those post which don't appear to relate to what you are doing at the present time. Part of the experience I want you to have with this mailing list is to learn how to handle a mailing list and when to post and when to read. To help our colleagues prioritize the list mail, please let's all do our best to make the subject line as relevant to, and descriptive of, the content of the email. Writing brief but descriptive subject lines is the best way to manage email. Please feel free to write to paula personally with any questions or problems that you run into! I am here for you. edmiston@matrixmagic.com
